Job description

FMNS is seeking an Research & Programming Support Officer for an 8-week summer contract. This position will be filled by a dynamic, focused, self-motivated individual and team player who is passionate about our local economy, local food, local producers, and farmers’ markets.

This position is based in Nova Scotia with the ability to work from home on a flexible schedule. We are looking for someone with sound knowledge and a strong background in research and project administration in a non-profit or similar setting. The ideal candidate is a self-starter capable of handling and prioritizing multiple tasks at a time, combined with a passion for local food.

Roles and responsibilities are subject to change over the course of this contract. The Research & Programming Support Officer will be responsible for working independently and directly with the various FMNS staff (Executive Director, Membership & Programs Lead, and Communications & Creative Lead) on a variety of key projects.

Key areas of support include but are not limited to:

  • Creating and maintaining a digital database (aka ‘small business digital ecosystem’) of entrepreneurial supports and programs throughout Nova Scotia.
    • This will include communicating directly with key personnel at FMNS’ partner organizations, as well as liaising with organizations FMNS does not currently work with.
  • Laying the groundwork for the upcoming FMNS 20th Anniversary Gala, which will take place in October 2024.
    • This will include working to identify sponsors, determine infrastructure requirements, and prepare initial programming for the event.
  • Supporting FMNS’ staff on an as-needed basis.

The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate how they meet the following:

  • Be aged 30 or younger, with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
  • Have expertise in project and program administration
  • Have experience in database design and management
  • Have a knack for event planning
  • Have knowledge, passion, and involvement in local food systems
  • Have strong communication skills, be self-directed with their time management, and thrive in dynamic work environments

Terms of contract

  • Remuneration
    • Flexible workweek; 32 hours per week for 8 weeks
    • $22/hour
  • Reporting to
    • Reporting to the Executive Director, while working indendently and occassionally with the Executive Director, Membership & Programs Lead, and Communications & Creative Lead
  • Location
    • The hired individual will work remotely from their own home office or other workspace available to them in their community
  • Anticipated contract start & end dates
    • Start date: Monday, June 17, 2024
    • End date: Friday, August 9, 2024
