We’re heading to Italy! Our Executive Director Justin Cantafio will be one of three Canadian delegates sent to the United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit 2021 pre-summit in Rome from July 23 to July 28, 2021. Justin will be participating in several meetings during this hybrid in-person and virtual meeting involving nations from around the world, including meeting with the UN Deputy Secretary Amina J. Mohammed.

FMNS will highlight the work we’ve done to support our provincial farmers’ market sector during COVID-19, our work as the founding organization of the Canadian Farmers’ Markets Coalition, and our provincially funded Nourishing Communities Food Coupon Program. FMNS will be representing Canada as a key voice for its farmers’ market sector.

FMNS is so excited to connect with local food sector leaders from around the world, including those directly involved in public markets. We can’t wait to give presentations on the excellent work that FMNS is doing in Nova Scotia and to attend international meetings regarding local and sustainable food systems. FMNS will take these learnings back to Nova Scotia and share with our membership.

This opportunity is a real honour and a testament to the strength and vibrancy of our province’s nation-leading farmers’ market sector. We’re looking forward to further strengthening our understanding of key issues related to the social and economic sustainability and impact of public markets and the local food movement. FMNS will learn about how to further increase the social and economic impact of Nova Scotia’s farmers’ market sector.
